FOOT CARE SERVICES: FLAT FOOT SERVICES
Introduction

Flat feet is without a doubt the most common foot deformity. An estimated 20–30% of the general population has flat feet. Depending upon the severity of the flat feet and other foot or ankle conditions, some individuals may experience problems which limit their activities, however others may experience no problems and even see no decrease in running speed due to their flat feet. Plus, whereas some people only require moderate treatment, many people require no treatment at all for this condition. Flat feet normally does not cause problems, however it can lead to a wide variety of other problems such as arthritis, heel pain, bunions and back pain.

What Causes Flat Feet?

You can be born with flat feet, but you can also acquire it later in life. The chance of getting flat feet can be influenced by the type of shoes you wear, posture, sitting positions, sleep position or compensation for leg problems. Flat feet can be developed as an adult due to injury, illness, unusual and/or prolonged stress to the foot, bad biomechanics, or as part of the normal aging process. Pregnant women are also at risk to develop Flat feet as a result of the increased elasticity during pregnancy. However, sadly, if developed by adulthood, flat feet generally remain flat permanently..

Treatment Options

It is important to determine the type of flat feet and its cause before initiating any kind of treatment program. This can be found with a thorough examination in conjunction with x-rays, CT scans and MRI scans. One method for treatment involves insoles, splints, manipulation, or casting. Whereas surgery is rarely required, sometimes in more severe cases that do not respond to other forms of treatment, it is necessary.
